Marble Falls girls soccer continues positive trends at Waco tourney
The Marble Falls High School girls soccer team posted a 1-1-1 record at the Waco Tournament Jan. 11-13.
The Lady Mustangs beat Waco La Vega 3-0, lost to Lorena 3-1 and tied Waco Midway 1-1.
Presley Kahl scored two goals, while Miley Bolanos, Ashley Ferreira and Briseah Rivera scored one each.
“We earned the goals,” head coach Abigail Blunt said. “It wasn’t on errors. Nobody was on the backside. We created it and made it happen. It was that good. It was awesome to see.”
The Lady Mustangs played well and showed a commitment to improving in key areas, she said.
“I really liked our passes in the midfield. It became more consistent,” she said. “We saw less transition goals. We were able to track more positive play, which is good for us.”
Goalie Mia Trejo made the all-tournament team for the Lady Mustangs’ side of the bracket. Blunt believes one big reason is because opponents tried to take advantage of the wind being at their backs by attempting shots that test Trejo’s reach and ability to cover the entire goal
“I’ve never had a player make the all-tournament team,” Blunt said. “She was shocked. She made saves. She made a lot of saves that were crazy good. She took a lot of shots and saved a ton that ricocheted just right. In general she made a ton of saves that were good. It wasn’t anything that we were doing wrong. The wind was their friend, so they attempted shots they wouldn’t normally do.”
She noted one area she wants to see improve.
“We struggled with consistency,” the coach said. “We’ll have good games and not good games. In this tournament specifically, can we continue to grow against different teams we see? We haven’t seen La Vega ever. It’s good to go into games and not know anything from previous games. We don’t know them. What are you going to do?”
Fast adjustments, Blunt added, make a big difference.
“Can they quickly adapt?” she said. “In this tournament, you see different styles of play. (My players) have to adapt quickly. As coaches, we have to do that, too. Some of the girls are already adapting. They’re playing in spots they’re usually not playing.”
The Marble Falls junior varsity welcomes Austin Navarro at 4:30 and the varsity hosts Uvalde at 5:45 p.m., at Mustang Stadium, both Friday, Jan. 19.
